Ben Sherman timeless fashion

In 1963 the Ben Sherman company was founded by Arthur Bernard Sugarman (1925-1987) in his native Brighton, Sugarman had emigrated to the USA shortly after WWII and become an American Citizen, learning about the clothing trade from the father of his third wife, he relocated back to Brighton when his mother became ill.

The Ben Sherman company was the first to produce the famous Oxford shirt with its button-down collar, which rapidly grew in popularity and became ‘the shirt’ for mods, skinheads and suedeheads.

Long synonymous with the music scene the Ben Sherman was made popular by 60’s bands such as The Who, The Birds, The Animals, The Kinks and the Troggs, just watch any old grainy black and white footage of ‘Ready Steady Go’ and see the bands done up to the nines all wearing their button down Bens.

The post punk era in the late 70’s early 80’s saw the Ben Sherman back in the forefront of fashion thanks to bands including The Jam, Specials, Undertones, Buzzcocks and Nine Below Zero.

In the Brit pop era Oasis and Blur were often seen sporting Ben Sherman shirts and it is still a popular choice with Indie Bands today, however it is a fashion not exclusive to the music industry, football legend George Best insisted that his boutiques stocked Ben Sherman as does his modern day counterpart Rio Ferdinand.

Today as well as still producing some of the finest shirts Ben Sherman also include jackets, parkas, jumpers and t shirts in their range of men’s and women’s clothing.
