Born Karl Anderson, Jr. in 1959, the son of Joan Krystosek Kors of New York City, a former model. Michael Kors began his career in fashion at the age of 19, he studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and he was responsible for designing and merchandising a collection for the renowned boutique Lothar’s of New York.

Flush with the success of this initial collection, Kors decided to go it alone and in 1981 the Michael Kors label was formed, his first women’s collection was launched at Saks Fifth Avenue and Bergdorf Goodman.

On the back of these accomplishments, French fashion house Celine appointed Kors as it’s first ever women’s ready-to-wear designer and creative director in 1997. In his time at Celine, Kors turned around the company’s fortunes, the ready-to-wear and accessories collections received many plaudits. Kors decided to leave Celine in October of 2003 to concentrate on his own brand.

In 2001, Michael Kors launched accessories under his collection label. Today, the line includes a full range of women’s handbags, shoes, belts and eyewear. In January 2002, the company launched a full-scale men’s collection in response to the critical acclaim received by a capsule menswear line launched in 1997.

In addition to the Micheal Kors signature collection, the MICHAEL by Michael Kors and KORS by Michael Kors collections were launched in 2004. KORS is considered the mid-tier line, between the signature collection and MICHAEL collections. The MICHAEL line includes women’s ready-to-wear clothing and accessories. The KORS line includes footwear. Kors fragrances were first introduced in 2000.

Celebrities who have worn fashion created by Michael Kors include Jennifer Lopez, Charlize Theron, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Pierce Brosnan, Sharon Stone, Madonna, Barbra Streisand, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anjelica Huston, Kate Bosworth, Sigourney Weaver, Usher, Liv Tyler, Jessica Simpson and Rene Russo.
