Bra fitting encouraged before breast reduction
The British Medical Association has been told that women considering having breast reduction surgery should first be informed about the importance of a professionally fitted bra and the physical symptoms caused by wearing one the wrong size. Such symptoms, which often lead women to believe that they need breast reduction surgery, are shoulder ache, backache and neck ache. It has been suggested in a motion, which was presented to the BMA, that the services of professional bra fitters should be made available to the NHS.
To spot if you have been wearing a wrongly fitted bra, follow these 6 simple guidelines:
- If the bust spills over the top of the cup then you are wearing the wrong size cup.
- The underwire should not dig into the breast tissue, it should lie flat against the breast bone and sit against the body.
- The part in the middle of the bra, the centre gore, should also sit flat against the breastbone.
- The underband should fit comfortably in the middle of the back, forming a straight line. You are wearing the wrong size if it rises up and down.
- The weight of your bust should be taken by the underband. If the straps of the bra are digging into your shoulders and feel uncomfortable then you are wearing the wrong size as the straps are taking the weight of your bust.
- At least every 6 months, women should aim to be professionally fitted with a lingerie specialist or in a department store. If you lose weight, have children, get older, your breast size can fluctuate. It is therefore very important to be regularly checked.
