In 1903 Montague Burton founded the Cross-Tailoring Company which later became the House of Burton. The 18 year old was committed to providing the public with high quality, made to measure, suits at low prices and promised his customers “A five guinea suit for 55 shillings” which revolutionised the tailoring industry. By 1929 there were 400 Burton shops, factories and mills when the company when public.
For both world wars, the House of Burton switched it’s attention from creating suits to producing uniforms for the troops. In 1952 Sir Montague Burton died and in 1967 the company was bought by Arcadia. In 1966 the England World Cup winners were dressed in Burton suits on their return from their victory and in 1999 the company became the official F.A. supplier for the England squad, thus supplying them with suits for both Euro 200 and the 2002 World Cup teams. In 2002 the Arcadia group which owns Burton was acquired by Philip Green who is the first sole owner of this prestigious company since it’s founder, Montague Burton. For over 100 years this great company has made suits to a high standard for it’s customers, and is one of the most well known British suit brands today.
