Cashmere Clothing

June 3rd, 2010

Cashmere wool, normally simply referred to as cashmere, is a fibre obtained from the Cashmere goat. Cashmere wool is fine in texture, and it is also strong, light, and soft, clothing made from it is extremely warm to wear. The word cashmere its self is derived from an old spelling of Kashmir.

Cashmere is gathered during the spring moult season which is when the goats naturally cast off their winter coat. China is the biggest producer of raw cashmere and they produce an estimated 10,000 tonnes per year, the total combined yield worldwide is between 15,000 and 20,000 tonnes, this is cleaned by removing course hair, dirt and grease and the result is an estimated 6,500 tonnes of pure cashmere, a single goat produces roughly 150 grammes.

Cashmere is made into a wide range of garments including; pashminas, knitwear, capes, coats, and baby clothing.
