 Tattoo

Tattoo’s originally come from ancient Egypt where wall paintings as old as 2000 BC have been suggesting the use of tattoos in the ancient Egyptian society.

They are an integral part of some religious groups where each person following the religion is required to have that tattoo mark on their body symbolizing the person authority as a group member.

They are also popular in the military with more tattoos seen in the navy than any other of the armed forces.

Most Rock followers have had tattoos done of their favourite band, or girlfriend and that has been accepted for many generations. However in the 2000’s tattoos have now become a permanent fashion accessory, with designs appearing on legs, arms, and the lower back. These tattoos are similar to Henna body art or Japanese symbols.

When thinking about having a tattoo, remember it is a lifelong commitment, and will you still appreciate it when you are collecting your pension!

June is Male Cancer Awareness Month

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

This June sees the 10th Annual Everyman Male Cancer Awareness Month, the purpose of which is to help raise awareness of, and fund research into, prostate and testicular cancer.

Prostate cancer has overtaken lung cancer as the most common cancer in men, and the incidence of testicular cancer has increased dramatically - almost 4-fold in the last 50 years. And it’s not only men who need to take notice - women play a crucial role in encouraging loved ones to visit doctors and making sure the message is heard loud and clear.

A host of stars are giving their support including Sir Terry Wogan, Dermot O’Leary, Frank Skinner, Jason Donovan and Linford Christie.

Up and coming fashion and jewellery designer Husam El Odeh has designed a limited edition pin badge which is being sold in Topman stores and at Topman online. The pin takes the shape of a smiley face centred inside the male symbol ♂. The badges are priced at £2 with all proceeds going directly to the Everyman Campaign.

Abstain from alcohol when pregnant

Friday, May 25th, 2007

New guidelines issued by the Department of Health say that women who are pregnant or wish to conceive should totally abstain from drinking alcoholic beverages, this replaces previous advice which recommended not more than one or two units of alcohol once or twice a week and to avoid getting drunk.

In 2006 the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit was commissioned by the Department of Health to review all evidence on the effects of alcohol on the developing embryo, foetus and child, while the unit found that there was no consistent evidence that low to moderate consumption of alcohol during pregnancy has any adverse effects, there was some evidence that binge drinking could affect development of the foetus especially in the neural area.

It is estimated by the National Organisation on Foetal Alcohol Syndrome that there are more than 6,000 children born in the UK each year with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
