Taking good care of your feet

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

According to research 75% of people in the UK experience some kind of foot problem.

Badly fitting shoes, too much walking, and being overweight are common causes of aching feet. Ligaments in the foot become strained which leads to pain in the middle of the foot, discomfort may also spread along the inside of the foot and into the calf.

Foot strain of this type often disappears with rest, if the pain continues consult a doctor.

More serious foot problems can be caused by wearing the wrong shoes.

Shoes which are too tight cause bunions, corns and calluses and if worn too much and too often may even result in deformed feet.

Shoes which are too loose may slip up and down causing painful blisters.

Continuous wearing of shoes with heels higher than 5cm (2″) compresses the toes, may cause bunions , over lapping toes, and backache.

Wearing the correct fitting shoes is one of the keys to avoiding foot problems, get your feet measured, its not just children who should have their feet measured, feet can increase in size as we grow older.

The best way to strengthen your feet is to go barefoot as much as possible, this improves the mobility of the toes, reduces tension in the feet and generally helps you to relax.

Take regular care of your feet, cut your toenails regularly, and wash your feet daily in warm soapy water, make sure you dry them thoroughly.

Treat yourself to a pedicure every so often, or do one on yourself at home.

Regular foot massage also helps to improve circulation and relieve tensions.

Hair loss - what happens and what you can do about it

Sunday, August 5th, 2007

The average healthy scalp sheds approximately 100 hairs every day as part of the natural process by which hairs grow, fall out and get replaced. A higher rate of loss can lead to thinning or to partial or total baldness. Coping with hair loss can prove challenging.

The loss may be temporary, in which case a doctor, dermatologist (skin specialist) or a trichologist (hair and scalp specialist) may be able to give advice about the ways to help the hair return.

Temporary hair loss baldness has numerous possible causes. Lack of protein from too strict a diet or from iron deficiency anaemia is a common cause and often a change of diet can work, increase the intake of meat, eggs, cereal and fresh pulses (peas, beans) and fruit, however if anaemia is suspected consult a GP.

Illnesses where high fever is one of the symptoms are another frequent cause of hair loss, so are scalp diseases such as Alopecia.

Other common causes of hair loss include radiation and drug therapy, hormonal changes (for example after giving birth).

Chemical hair treatments and dyes, excessive use of heated rollers or hair straighteners and wearing ‘tight’ hairstyles such as ponytails can accelerate hair loss often hair will return to normal when these practices are abandoned.

Permanent, partial or complete baldness or hair thinning is often hereditary, and it mainly affects men, although women going through the menopause often find that hair thinning occurs and that it stays that way. Toupees or wigs can be used to disguise permanent baldness.

Buy Discount Cosmetics have a number of hair loss products, such as food supplements, shampoos and conditioners.

Smoking - kick the habit

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

With the July 1st smoking ban looming large on the horizon no doubt many of you are thinking about stopping smoking.

Start by making your own decision to kick the habit, if you try to stop just to please someone else the chances are you will fail.

Take a sheet of paper and draw a line down the centre, on one side list the reasons to give up, health implications, and think of other people affected such as your family and possibly even future children. Now on the other side of your paper make a realistic list of reasons for continuing to smoke.

Preparing to quit smoking

When you decide to stop smoking chose a date in the near future, if possible pick a time when a change in your normal routine occurs such as a holiday. Do not try to give up smoking in times of stress or anxiety.

Tell your friends and family of your decision they will help to strengthen your resolve, if possible team up with someone else who is determined to stop smoking too, sharing the experience often is a great help.

Make a note or diary of the times that you most want to smoke, this will help you to prepare for them when you finally stop.

Stopping Smoking

When the day to quit arrives, stop carrying cigarettes, matches or a lighter. Hide all ashtrays.

During the first few weeks you may experience moments of anxiety and a deep craving for a cigarette, endure them they will pass. To help keep yourself busy and take more exercise.

When you feel a deep seated urge to smoke, take some deep breaths, eat some nuts or other nutritious snacks (avoid sweets), drink water or fruit juice.

Don’t start worrying about never smoking again, simply take things one day at a time, it makes it easier to conquer the habit.

Remember you do not have to tackle your addiction alone, speak to your Doctor about local support groups, visit the websites ASH and QUIT for more help and advice.

June is Male Cancer Awareness Month

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

This June sees the 10th Annual Everyman Male Cancer Awareness Month, the purpose of which is to help raise awareness of, and fund research into, prostate and testicular cancer.

Prostate cancer has overtaken lung cancer as the most common cancer in men, and the incidence of testicular cancer has increased dramatically - almost 4-fold in the last 50 years. And it’s not only men who need to take notice - women play a crucial role in encouraging loved ones to visit doctors and making sure the message is heard loud and clear.

A host of stars are giving their support including Sir Terry Wogan, Dermot O’Leary, Frank Skinner, Jason Donovan and Linford Christie.

Up and coming fashion and jewellery designer Husam El Odeh has designed a limited edition pin badge which is being sold in Topman stores and at Topman online. The pin takes the shape of a smiley face centred inside the male symbol ♂. The badges are priced at £2 with all proceeds going directly to the Everyman Campaign.
