Paul Frank Clothing - whimsical cult fashion from California

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

The year was 1995 and Paul Frank Industries (PFI) began in the humble surroundings of a small garage in Huntington Beach. A group of friends busily hand sewed wallets and handbags with scraps of Naugahyde, which is a type of vinyl with its origins in the 1950’s motor trade.

Characters such as the now famous Julius the monkey were created to decorate these accessories, originally these wallets and handbags were made as gifts, however it wasn’t long before they gained the attention of a wider audience.

December of 1997 saw Paul Frank Industries (PFI) formally incorporated, in the years that followed the company has gained an almost cult-like following, people of ages love PFI’s witty take on every day objects and situations.

Naugahyde, which was a revolutionary material to incorporate in fashion accessories back in 1995, is still used on key pieces in the Paul Frank collections every year.

Celebrities including Hilary Duff, Avril Lavigne, The White Stripes, Jason Schwarzman, Elijah Wood and Michael Rapaport are just some that have embraced the brand.

Paul Frank clothing and accessories have also appeared in mainstream blockbuster movies such as Superbad, Knocked Up, Austin Powers, American Pie and Charlie’s Angels.

A selection of Paul Frank clothing and accessories can be found at Vintage Tee Shirts.
