Beatrix Ong Shoes

Tuesday, January 8th, 2008

Beatrix Ong launched her first collection at London fashion week in 2002. She was an instant success leading to over 30 prestigious stockists worldwide selling her shoes.

Beatrix had started her fashion career by enrolling in Central St. Martins and London School of Communication in London, and later moving to New York to study at The Fashion Institute of Technology. Her big break came when she started designing for Jimmy Choo.

She finally went solo as she wanted to push the boundaries of shoe making and make shoes that ladies found comfortable during the day, but were special enough for them to carry on wearing in the evening.

Dr Martens makers of original boots, shoes and sandals

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

1st April, 1960, may seem a pretty inauspicious date however on this day the Dr Martens boot was born, from the unlikely alliance between a German inventor and a family of English footwear manufacturers.
Dr Martens - Classics - 1461z - Black Smooth
The inventor Dr Maertens of Munich, Germany, had a garage full of inventions, including a revolutionary shoe sole almost literally made of air, the Griggs family from Northampton, England, had a long family tradition of manufacturing quality footwear. They came together via a classified advertisement in a magazine.

Together they took risks, they jointly designed and created a boot that was not only practical and hard-wearing, but also exceptionally comfortable, the design became a classic.

Postmen, factory workers and transport unions bought the boot by the thousand, then something incredible started to happen, they were joined by rejects, outcasts and rebels from the fringes of society.
Initially it was the working classes but before long everyone was clamoring for a pair of Docs, the boot for the masses.

In the early 1960s the skinhead subculture adopted the Dr Marten boot as a symbol of their movement.

Since these early beginnings Doctor Martens have continued to be associated with youth culture, mods, glam rockers, punks, ska, psychobillies, grebos, goths, industrialists, nu-metal, hardcore, straight-edge, grunge, Britpop.

Now as the new century is over two thirds of the way through its first decade the youth of today is less tribal, what you wear is now more of a statement than a way of life, tribal warfare on the streets between different factions is now thankfully a thing of the past.

In this new era where individuality is omnipotent there is still a place for Dr Martens, as today’s teenagers create their own style.
