Clarks Shoes how it all began.

September 24th, 2009

You may be surprised to learn that the very first item of footwear made by Clarks was not a shoe but a sheepskin slipper, the year was 1825 and the location was the tannery owned by Cyrus Clark in the Somerset village of Street, Cyrus’ brother James Clark was looking at the ever growing pile of offcuts from the manufacture of sheepskin rugs when he had a eureka moment, “slippers”, from this humble beginning the Clarks shoe empire was born.

Ever loyal to it’s heritage Clarks International is still based in Street where it all began, they have seen footwear fads and fashions come and go, and return again, winklepickers, court shoes, wedges, sandals and sneakers and they put their heart and soul into each and every pair of shoes to produce fashionable footwear which protects and cares for the feet of their customers and their families.
