Clothing firm director guilty of handling fakes

Yesterday Martin Rose a director of Middlesbrough company Maven UK was found guilty of handling fake Armani and Ralph Lauren shirts.

Rose, who was caught with the shirts in November 2005, has been ordered to do 75 hours unpaid community service and had assets of £125,000 seized plus £3,600 in court costs.

Prosecutor Charlene Sumnall told Teesside Crown Court that 1,941 counterfeit items were recovered from Rose’s premises and another 836 fakes seized from a company in Milton Keynes that had been supplied by Rose.

Martin Rose is believed to have benefited by £800,000.

The fake shirts were of substandard quality with poor labelling, which Rose should have queried when he received them from his supplier.

The presiding judge found Rose guilty of neglect rather than wilful dishonesty.
