Deck shoes, a.k.a. boat shoes, boating shoes or topsiders, are generally canvas or leather rubber soled shoes designed for use on the deck of a boat. A siping pattern (thin slits) is cut into the soles, this provides traction in wet and icy conditions, the leather upper, is designed to repel water.
Modern deck shoes were invented in 1935 by Paul Sperry who noticed his dog’s ability to run easily over ice and snow. He cut thin slits into his shoe soles, inspiring the perfect footwear for boating.
These days deck shoes are not only used by sailors, since the 1980s they have become fashionable footwear, and for Summer 2010 they have floated to the surface again. Give these attractive and comfortable shoes a try you wont be disappointed. Available in mens and womens styles.
