The term EMO originated as a genre of rock music. It was used as a term to describe hardcore punk in the mid-1980s. In later years, the term emocore, short for “emotional hardcore†was born.
The term emo was derived from the fact that on occasion members of a band would become spontaneous and strongly emotional during performances.
In the mid-1990’s emo began to reflect the indie scene, which was more melodic and less chaotic than its predecessor.
Recent indie bands have emulated the more mainstream style, creating emo as a style in popular music.
Emo fashion has its roots in punk fashion and subculture, with some attributes of gothic fashion.
Emo clothing is characterised by tight jeans on both males and females, tight t-shirts that often bear the names of rock bands, studded belts, and belt buckles. Footwear is normally Converse All-Stars shoes or Skate shoes.
An emo’s appearance is straightened dyed black hair with a long fringe often brushed to one side of the face, with thick black horn-rimmed glasses.
