Fashion designer Liz Claiborne dies in New York

Liz Claiborne a leading fashion designer who revolutionised clothing for the career woman in the 1970s has died aged 78.

Ms Claiborne died on Tuesday at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. She had been suffering from cancer for a number of years.

The designer, who was born in Belgium, launched her own label in 1976 with her husband Art Ortenberg. The company went public in 1981 and by 1985 Liz Claiborne Inc was the first company founded by a woman to be listed in the Fortune 500.

The speciality of Claiborne was stylish outfits for career women, making it easier for them to climb the corporate ladder.
