Yves Saint Laurent, one of the greatest fashion designers of all time has died at the age of 71.

Born in Algeria in 1936, the young Saint Laurent had a fascination with clothes and in 1953 at the tender age of 17 he arrived in Paris with a bulging portfolio of innovative designs.

At just 21 he became chief designer at the House of Dior before branching out on his own in 1960.

Yves Saint Laurent retired from haute couture in 2002 after half a century in the business, much of it spent at the very top.
