Asda has it’s own range of affordable quality clothing known as “George” which was created in 1990, Wal-Mart also sell the George brand in the United States, Canada and Japan. Named after George Davies the founder of Next, he was their original chief designer but is no longer associated with the brand, but it has aimed to remain true to the high quality, low price business model that he established. George at Asda was the first supermarket to stock wedding dresses, they cost just £60 while adult bridesmaid dresses ranged between £30 and £35 at launch.
In 2004, the George clothing brand was extended to a number of standalone George stores on the high street. In 2008 all George standalone stores were closed due to high rental costs resulting in low profits.
Asda, a British supermarket chain retailing in food, clothing, toys, general merchandise and mobile network “Asda Mobile” was founded as “Associated Dairies and Farm Stores Limited” in 1949 in Leeds but the adoption of the well known Asda name occurred in 1965 when the Asquith chain of three supermarkets and Associated Dairies merged; it is an abbreviation of Asquith and Dairies.
In 1999, Asda became a subsidiary of the American retail giant Wal-Mart (interestingly the worlds largest retailer) Asda is now the second largest chain in the UK after Tesco.
