An eco-fashion phenomena is sweeping the globe and it’s called swishing.
It’s great for the planet and your wardrobe and even better for your wallet. If you’re not acquainted with what Swishing is then put simply it is the business of swapping your clothes, shoes and accessories.
The fashion industry is worth £20.9 Billion annually in the UK but with big business comes big environmental impacts with waste, water and energy use – within the UK alone people buy more than two million tonnes of clothes each year we then throw away more than a million tonnes.
Swishing offers an alternative!
Traditionally clothing swaps were carried out between friends and many still do, however the concept has grown and moved to a whole new level; from public gardens to shops and workplaces you can find Swishing parties in nearly every city or town across the UK and there has even been an event held in the Houses of Parliament.
The idea of going swishing can be just a little daunting at first and I’ve come up with a a few pointers from friends to help you.
Rummage: in the very same way you do in shop sales and charity shops. Swishing is about rummaging to find that hidden gem.
Go with Friends: if you are a lazy shopper or find it hard to imagine how things will look on you then take a friend or two along with you. It’s always good to have a second set of eyes and pool resources.
Organise your own: if you still feel a little daunted by the idea of going to a swishing party, organise your own. Work with a group of friends and friends of friends to boost the stock. Make a day of it with cake and tea or maybe cocktails.
Be open Minded: second hand clothes will never look the same as something brand new. Swishing parties DO have rules about what you can and cannot swap (for example nothing torn, stained or too worn) but don’t expect to walk into a swishing party and be like a high street store.
Keep friends and family in mind: if you don’t find something you like, but you find something a friend or family member might like then it’s just as good – take home free goodies for the whole family!
