Hair loss – what happens and what you can do about it

The average healthy scalp sheds approximately 100 hairs every day as part of the natural process by which hairs grow, fall out and get replaced. A higher rate of loss can lead to thinning or to partial or total baldness. Coping with hair loss can prove challenging.

The loss may be temporary, in which case a doctor, dermatologist (skin specialist) or a trichologist (hair and scalp specialist) may be able to give advice about the ways to help the hair return.

Temporary hair loss baldness has numerous possible causes. Lack of protein from too strict a diet or from iron deficiency anaemia is a common cause and often a change of diet can work, increase the intake of meat, eggs, cereal and fresh pulses (peas, beans) and fruit, however if anaemia is suspected consult a GP.

Illnesses where high fever is one of the symptoms are another frequent cause of hair loss, so are scalp diseases such as Alopecia.

Other common causes of hair loss include radiation and drug therapy, hormonal changes (for example after giving birth).

Chemical hair treatments and dyes, excessive use of heated rollers or hair straighteners and wearing ‘tight’ hairstyles such as ponytails can accelerate hair loss often hair will return to normal when these practices are abandoned.

Permanent, partial or complete baldness or hair thinning is often hereditary, and it mainly affects men, although women going through the menopause often find that hair thinning occurs and that it stays that way. Toupees or wigs can be used to disguise permanent baldness.
