Hoodie - Behind the fashion
All hoodies have a similar design. They have large frontal pockets, a hood, and some type of draw string, used to adjust the hood opening.
The clothing is perceived differently in different countries. In America hoodies are a staple of male attire regardless of the weather, while in the UK hoodies are seen very negatively.
The hoodie was first created by Champion in the 1930s for laborers in the frozen warehouses of New York, however it was not until the 1970’s that it became a fashion item due to several factors.
Hip hop culture started developing in New York City, and the hoodies element of instant anonymity, provided by the accessible hood, appealed to those with criminal intent. Also its iconic appearance in the blockbuster Rocky film embodied the persevering spirit of the American Dream especially with college students.
By the 1990s the hoodie had moved into the skate and surf world, with top designers Tommy Hilfiger, Giorgio Armani, and Ralph Lauren adding hoodies to their collections.
