The Karen Millen Company is an archetypal rags to riches story, Karen Millen was launched in 1981 by Karen Millen and Kevin Stanford. Starting with a £100 loan, and Millen’s parents kitchen, they began designing and making white shirts to sell to their friends. A party plan scheme came next, along the lines of Tupperware, in 1983 the first Karen Millen store opened in Kent.
The company has seen expansion year on year, they now have a presence not only in the United Kingdom but also Europe, the former Soviet Union, Asia, Australia and the United States.
Since March 2009 Karen Millen been a part of Aurora Fashions.
2006 saw Gemma Metheringham become the Karen Millen creative director she heads up a team of twelve designers who work on the ready to wear, accessories and lingerie collections.
Everything in the Karen Millen collections is designed in house, from the lace used in their celebrated eveningwear to the brocaded hardware on statement handbags. In house pattern cutters complete the fashion team, and are an integral cog in the perfection of the flattering fit for which Karen Millen are famous.
