Now if thoughts of granddad resplendent with pipe and slippers asleep in front of the fire or Val Doonican singing songs from his rocking chair are what spring to mind you couldn’t be more wrong, the modern mens cardigan is not sloppy knitwear.

A cardigan is the perfect way to add smartness under a jacket, after all the original was all about military smartness taking its name from the Seventh Earl of Cardiga, James Brudenell.Famous names following this trend include Mark Ronson, Daniel Craig, David Beckham, James McAvoy and Ireland rugby captain Brian O’Driscoll.

Style tip - avoid baggy cardigans they do absolutely nothing for your image, there is no right or wrong way to wear the cardigan, however, if a cardigan simply looks wrong on you don’t wear it, not everyone can pull off the look.
