Mey bodywear - Timeline

The history of Mey bodywear.

1928 Mr Franz Mey founded the business with a piecework knitting factory.

1948 The brothers Franz and Karl Mey establish the company Gebrüder Mey OHG. Manufacturing of off-the-peg clothing, a range of garments for men, women and children.

1952 The company built its first factory on the Hohenwiesenstrasse in Lautlingen.

1956 The company is now run by Messrs. Franz and Albrecht Mey (father and son).

1957 Mey Innovation - introduction of coloured photo inserts in see-through packages. From the self-service aspect, customers can inform themselves directly about form, size etc. of the packaged bodywear without having to unwrap it.

1959 Saw the construction of the Mey sewing plant in Dormettingen. A decision was made to specialise in ladies’ bodywear market.

1961 It was decided to partner only with specialised trade, and not supply the cut-price consumer markets.

1962 All products were brought together under the umbrella of the Mey brand name.

1964 Decision was made to stick with bodywear with the aim to strive for greater perfection, quality and fashion.

1966 The introduction of flat, stackable see-through boxes with photo inserts launched.

1972 The building of a new production plant in Lautlingen with all the latest technology and equipment.

1973 The introduction of Only Lycra, the first range of briefs in the branch manufactured from core yarn, cotton-covered Lycra, for a perfect fit.

1974 Following the death of Mr Franz Mey, the company is run by the brothers Albrecht Mey and Dietmar Mey.

1976 Construction of new office building in Lautlingen.

1978 The edge-trimming of shirts and briefs features the super-flat and soft Mey-Hem. It doesn’t wear out, isn’t visible and doesn’t pinch. The manufacturing method was developed by Mey. To ensure nothing chafes, even the seams of the Mey hems under the arms have a super-flat finish.

1983 The introduction of Noblesse, super-combed top-quality cotton yarn, processed on a super-fine knitting machine, offering excellent elasticity and visual appeal as well as keeping its shape perfectly.

1984 Acquisition of a men’s bodywear factory in Bitz with the aim of manufacturing Mey men’s bodywear in the same tried and tested quality as the ladies’ bodywear. The plant in Bitz is geared towards the specific Mey requirements. Mey Innovation - Mey Seamless, the finest shirt hem, doesn’t wear out, doesn’t deteriorate, developed to perfection by Mey.

1985 Mey Innovation - the snug-fitting functional cut for shirts is patented for Mey men’s bodywear.

1987 Construction of new sewing plant in Dormettingen.

1989 Mey Innovation - in connection with the EAN labelling, Mey produces its bodywear with a recommended retail price in order to reduce labelling costs in the retail trade and the flow time for incoming merchandise.

1991 New construction in Celorico da Beira, Portugal.

1992 New construction of Mey men’s bodywear in Bitz.

1995 Mey Inovation - Meylights, feels like silk - but it is in fact Meylights.

1997 Mey Innovation - introduction of the Mey bodywear hanger, together with the ecologically-oriented hanger cycle system.

1998 Environment prize - the Mey bodywear hanger and the hanger cycle initiated by Mey was awarded the environment prize 98.
1999 Mey BEST OF - finest cotton with a hint of LYCRA has a super-comfortable fit thanks to a Mey Innovation. Mey EMOTION - The fabric blend manufactured from natural viscose and superfine Meryl (microfibre) guarantees exceptional comfort. Mey SOFT SHAPE - the innovation in bodywear basics manyufactured from Meryl and Lycra - superbly soft to the touch.

2000 An Advisory Board is set upMey-Volution - the new packaging is eye-catching, promises a high product identification value and is clearly differentiated from other brands.

2000 New construction in Veresegyház, Hungary.

2002 Death of Mr Albrecht Mey. Reorganisation of the management. Single management for ladies’ and menswear segments. Division into Sales & Marketing, Production and Finance & Service departments. Introduction of meyNIGHT. Mey takes another step in its successful expansion and underscores its position as an international, top-selling comprehensive brand.

2004 Introduction of meySPORTS. The innovative power and technical competence in the bodywear segment are decisive for the outstanding products in the meySPORTS range.

2006 Best Brands Award - Mey achieves an outstanding 2nd place in the “Fastest-growing product brand” category. The result is established by a representative study conducted by the GfK market research institute. The brands are judged according to their commercial market success as well as their psychological attractiveness for consumers.
