Opal the Birthstone for October
Celebrated for it’s rainbow tinged iridescence, Opal is the birthstone for October in addition to being the recommended present for couples celebrating their fourteenth wedding anniversary.
The name opal is believed to be a derivation of the the Sanskrit word ‘upala’, signifying ‘precious stone’, this affords a clue as to the high esteem in which these beautiful gemstones have been regarded throughout history as does it’s renown for being the “Queen of gems”.
Opal has long been considered to represent hope, innocence and purity, they were even worn in the hair of fair haired girls during the middle ages in the belief that it would protect their blonde locks. At historically opals have also been said to be beneficial to eyesight, banish evil spirits, render the wearer invisible in times of trouble and favour children, theatre, amusements and friendship.
