Pearl the June Birthstone

The birthstone for June is the Pearl, which is believed to embody the qualities of modesty, chastity and purity.

Pearls are also associated with peace, beauty and are the accepted anniversary gift for couples celebrating 30 years of marriage.

There are eight basic shapes or pearl these are round, semi-round, button, drop, pear, oval, baroque, and ringed. Flawless perfectly round pearls are extremely rare and very expensive, they are generally used in necklaces, or strings of pearls.

Semi-round pearls are often used in necklaces too or in pieces of jewellery where the shape can be disguised to look like it perfectly round. Button pearls are in appearance like a slightly flattened round pearl and usually used in single pendants or earrings where the back half of the pearl is covered, making it look like a larger, round pearl.

Drop and pear shaped pearls are sometimes referred to as teardrop pearls and are most often seen in earrings, pendants, or as a center pearl in a necklace. Baroque pearls are often very irregular in shape and are used to make unique jewellery items and unusual necklaces. Ringed pearls can be identified by concentric ridges, or rings, around the body of the pearl these are found in all types of jewellery pieces.
