I am concerned about oily shine spoiling my make-up, is there any way to control the shine without using the dreaded face powder, which is a pet hate of mine?

Try using one of the new mattifying moisturisers which are now available. They contain micro-capsules which absorb oils like a sponge and help keep pores unclogged. Use in place of your regular moisturiser, be sure to clean your face thoroughly before use. Guinot Matizone Shine Control Moisturiser or Clearskin Mattifying Moisturiser should do the trick.
