Size Zero - recommendations still to be implemented

The British Fashion Council (BFC) has revealed that many of the actions proposed by an inquiry into the health of fashion models have yet to be implemented.

The Model Health Inquiry which was organized after the “size zero” debate in to whether models are unhealthily thin, the findings of the inquiry were published in September and several recommendations were made to the fashion industry, these included a ban on models under the age of 16 and non-smoking and drug-free backstage environments.

According to a progress update published by the BFC on Friday 21st December, many of the recommendations are not being implemented.

One of the major drawbacks is that a great deal of the proposals require international cooperation, particularly from the US, France and Italy, whose designers have a major influence.

The BFC, has written to the fashion councils in the US and Italy in an attempt to set up an international “health certificate” for models, but an agreement has yet been made.

The BFC is hopeful that something will be in place by the summer of 2008 in time for the shows in September.
