Speedo have long been synonymous with swimming and they are universally the swim brand of choice.
Speedo originated in 1914, but they had to wait until 1928 before acquiring the now famous brand name.
The company, which initially manufactured underwear, was started by a Alexander MacRae a Scotsman, who emigrated to Australia in 1910, the original name being MacRae Hosiery manufacturers.In the 1920′s swimming became an established sport and its popularity grew. MacRae introduced the classic, figure-hugging ‘Racerback’ costume, which permitted greater freedom of movement, allowing wearers to swim faster. In 1928 a member of MacRae’s staff Captain Parsons came up with the slogan ‘Speed on in your Speedos’. In 1929, the first SPEEDO® swimsuits were being produced. The newly named brand was an immediate success partly due to the exploits of Swedish swimmer Arne Borg, who set a world record in SPEEDO® swimwear.
Over the decades Speedo swimwear has been worn by many gold medalists of major swimming events including the Olympic Games. In 1972 at the Munich Olympics, a staggering 21 out of the 22 world records were broken by swimmers wearing the brand and at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, 52 out of 54 countries Speedo swimsuits.The Speedo range is vast encompassing the full spectrum from professional sports equipment leisure wear, with anti-chlorine fabrics in the endurance range.
