Turning back time for fashion

Young fashion designers in the North of England have spent the last three months working on a fashion project, they delved back through history researching what was worn in Anglo-Saxon times how the cloth was manufactured, dyed and how the clothing was made.

The group of eighteen students all aged between 16 and 19 spent time working with archaeologists, historians, designers and textile artists, learning a wide range of ancient skills and finally they created a collection of modern fashions based on the techniques used.

The project has been funded by Renaissance in the Regions plus a £23,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund Young Roots scheme.

The fashion collection goes on display at the Museum of Hartlepool’s Maritime Experience on Saturday until Sunday 14th October.

Sophie Ingleby, outreach officer in the Museums and Heritage Service, said:

“The students’ designs are stunning. It’s hard to believe that the vibrant colours have come from natural dyes.”

The museum is open seven days a week, between 10am and 5pm.

Admission is free.
