UK closes gap on Italy in annual clothing spend
In a new report by market analyst Verdict, United Kingdom residents spent an average of £556 on clothes a last year, this is up from £518 in 2001.
Italy remain in the top spot, however the UK is catching up. The Italian average clothing spend for 2006 was £602 each a drop of £20 from the £622 recorded five years earlier.
Italy, UK, Germany, France, Spain and Holland reportedly account for £4 of every £5 spent on clothing in the EU.
Although spending across these six countries collectively rose by a mere 3.9 per cent in the five years to 2006.
A major growth area in the EU is the new member states, for example Estonia saw its average annual spend per person almost double in the five year period up to £209 last year from £106 in 2001.
