UK consumers buy jeans with their beans

Research by market analyst TNS shows that sales of fashion items in supermarkets is slightly ahead of those in department stores for the first time, the supermarkets market share has risen to 7.4% in the past quarter, slightly ahead of department stores at 7.3%.

The report shows that four out of ten Britons have bought a clothing fashion item from a supermarket this year.

Clothing ranges such as George at Asda, Florence & Fred in Tesco and Sainsbury’s Tu are proving popular as UK shoppers look for cut price fashion.

Many Supermarkets are now bringing out premium ranges of their fashion collections.

Elaine Giles, TNS research executive, said:

“The attitude towards supermarkets is changing. Supermarkets have always been ahead in childrenswear, but are rapidly catching up in menswear and womenswear as well.”

Debenhams, who issued a profit warning in April are one of the department stores who have been hit hardest by the decline.

The UK fashion market is still dominated by high street chains such as Next, New Look, Primark and Top Shop which have over 80% of the market share in women’s and men’s clothing.
