Back in 1985 two friends George Treves and Sean Thomas were spending the ski season in Val d’isere, loving this life in the French Alps and determined not to return to university if they could help it the pair began to sell t shirts in order to fund being out there, this was the beginning of the iconic brand White Stuff that we know and love.

The name came from a popular BBC2 drama of the time “Boys from the Black Stuff” written by Alan Bleasdale thus the company became “Boys from the White Stuff” because of the snow, later the name was shortened simply to “White Stuff”.

The clothing became extremely popular and soon the pair were making not only tees but also sweatshirts and fleeces and all manner of other mountainwear.

The company really began to grow in 1991 when they opened the first White Stuff shop in London’s Northcote Road.

1993 saw the launch of their mail order catalogue and in 1996 the range expanded when the womenswear collection was added.

They are still growing and expanding year on year with currently 50 shops and a thriving internet business.
