Going to the casino can be such a fun experience and the perfect opportunity to get dressed up. I understand how finding the right attire can be confusing, cos check out those Bond movies and you see men and women dressed in perfect black tie with diamonds dripping, whereas those rom coms and sitcoms have people dressed in beach resort wear! So here I have put together a detailed guide on what to wear on a night out in a casino.
Preparing what to wear on a night out in a casino
Check out the dress code for a night at a casino:
Different casinos have different dress codes, so it is a good idea to go on the website and check what they mention. There is no point in dressing all formal when the dress code clearly says “casual”, cos you’ll just be out of place.
If the website does not mention a dress code, look up the theme or ambience of the place. You can usually judge from the pictures in the gallery and decide based on what the staff and guests are wearing.
We all know what this means! This also happens to be the most comfortable and something you can pack at the last minute. Believe it or not, there are some casinos that say you can dress casually and here it is best to not “dress up” as you will be out of place. However, it is also important that you don’t simply throw on your everyday wear, cos going to a casino is not an everyday event and deserves much better!
Men can wear a good pair of jeans in shades of blue, but keep the distress and rips to a minimum. Pair this with a nice tee shirt, preferably plain or patterned. Do check the dress code as even the casinos that allow casual wear might restrict tee shirts. To be on the safer side, you can wear a casual shirt with prints or patterns. During the day, you can also wear shirts with shorts.

Women have a plethora of options to choose from when it comes to casual casino wear. Pair slim fit or skinny jeans with a nice breezy shirt or some tee shirts. (Again, check if the casino allows tank tops and tee shirts before you decide to wear them). You can also wear a nice summer dress paired with a lovely scarf, or a cute pleated vintage skirt and blouse.
Check below for some options:
Business casual is always a grey area for most people because we end up overdoing it one end or the other. Here are a few options you can go with if the dress code says business casual.
This is also a good dress code to stick to if you don’t know or cannot understand what the club actually wants from the pictures on their website. You won’t stand out of the crowd if the dress code is formal, and you will be able to blend into a more casual atmosphere as well.
Men: Skip the jeans and go with khakis instead. Pair these with button down shirts or collared tee shirts. If you want to add some style, throw on a sports jacket or a blazer and complete the look with a pair of stylish leather loafers. If you love ties, feel free to pair one with your outfit!
Women: Women always have a lot of options. Club a pretty skirt or well fitted trousers with a nice blouse. You can also wear a soft textured shirt and top it with a solid coloured blazer or a cardigan. Accessorize with a bold piece of jewelry.
Very few casinos prefer this dress code, but you can stick to it if you don’t really know what they expect. This is typically what you would wear to a high profile meeting in your office job. I personally feel business formals are clothes that you can be comfortable enough to spend the day in, move around, sit down in, and look smart.
Men can pair well tailored formal trousers with a button down shirt and a tie. You can also wear a dark coloured suit with a shirt and skip the tie if you don’t feel like it. Match your leather shoes to your belt and wear them well polished. Complete the look with a neat watch.
Women can choose between a pair of trousers or a neat pencil skirt with panty hose and a buttoned down shirt. If shirts are boring, go for a pastel blouse in a flowy fabric like chiffon or satin. Here you can also wear a formal black dress or your LBD with a neat blazer and a pair of stilettos. Make sure your clothes aren’t too revealing as some casinos frown upon these. Don’t skip the jewelry but keep it minimal and classy.
However, if the dress code says semiformal, you can also choose a cocktail dress that is formal, yet not too evening gown-ish.
This is something most of us struggle with, as we wonder what the difference between black tie and Formal is. Think totally formal for this with no space to slack. There is also “Black Tie Optional” to add in the mix. To decode these, Black Tie Optional simply means “Formal”, and you can wear your business formal attire. However, Black Tie means you need to go one step beyond and either buy a tux or hire one.
Most casinos these days don’t enforce the “Black Tie” dress code, except for special evenings or events. It might also be required for access to premium VIP lounges. It’s always a good idea to check before you go.
Men go all the way with buttoned down shirts, a tie is compulsory (you can make it a bow tie if you wish), sharp suits (a three piece should be your first preference, but a two piece will also do) in deep or rich colours like Black, dark grey, Navy or Burgundy, paired with shiny polished leather shoes. Make sure that whatever accessories you pick are top notch and elegant. Cufflinks and tie pins are optional.
Women dress in long, floor length evening gowns. If you prefer cocktail dresses, choose ones that are at least knee level or go down to your shin. You can even wear neat pant suits in dark colours and rich fabrics with high heeled evening shoes or stilettos. Choose accessories that are neat and elegant, maybe just one piece that stands out. Pair your outfit with a small clutch purse.
This is almost never enforced by a casino these days, but if you do come across one that requests this dress code, you should be prepared. Think of the highest level of formality that you can dress in, and you will do it right.
Men: A well tailored and fitted dress coat or tuxedo, complete with tails, is what you should be wearing. Sloppiness or awkwardly fitting clothes are a big No. Wear your suit in a high quality fabric, one that fits comfortably and lets you move. You can move away from plain colours and go for self patterned ones, provided they are designed and made well. Wear a tux shirt in white and make sure the bib front is well starched and stands stiff. Pair your outfit with well polished black leather shoes. Accessories are almost something you cannot do without when you have to go white tie. Wear cufflinks, shirt studs or a lapel pin, depending on your taste.
If you decide to wear multiple accessories, make sure they don’t clash with each other.
Women: This is one of those evenings when you can live your Cinderella dream and dress for it.
Go full length evening gowns in flowy and rich fabrics. You can go all bling here with sequins and crystals on your gown, but if you decide to do so, keep the rest of your jewellry simple. You can also choose a ball gown and pair it with a lush wrap.
You can even go all English and wear silk gloves. Always wear high heeled shoes or stilettos with these gowns. Carry a neat clutch purse that matches your dress. Though you can go all bling, remember that sometimes “less is more”, so wear classy accessories to keep the focus on the most important thing there – You!
Now that you know what you can wear to a casino, here are some things you should Never wear to a casino:
- Tennis shoes or sneakers, even if they are clean and new. Not even if the dress code says “casual”
- Old, faded or torn clothing. This is simply disrespectful
- No Slippers or flipflops. Always stick to shoes like oxfords or loafers
- Most casinos have a different dress code for the evening, so if you are visiting in the morning, you can most probably wear casual attire, but check before you do
- Check the dress code specific to special events, night clubs or the lounges, as you won’t be allowed in if you don’t comply
Most importantly, remember to let loose and have fun!
